Trump Bans TikTok

President Donald Trump threatned to bak TikTok earlier this week unless the China based app is acquired by a U.S. company. Last Thursday, he enshrined that threat into an executive order, calling the wide use of Chinese apps a "national emergency."

"The spread in the United States of mobile applications developed and owned by companies in the People's Republic of China continues to threaten the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States," the exective order reads. "At this time, action must be taken to address the threat posed by one mobile application in particular, TikTok."

Coming hours after the Senate voted unanimously to bar ByteDance-owned TikTok from all government devices, the order states that "any transaction by any person" with ByteDance or its subsidiaries will be prohibited in 45 days. This would likely mean that Apple and Google would no longer be able to list the app on their respective app stores, like the prohibition against U.S. companies dealing with Huawei.
